Church. We often use the term without realizing what it means.
When the 1st century disciples of Jesus sought a word to describe their community, they chose the word “ecclesia,” from which we get “church.”Now here’s the interesting thing. The word did not refer to anything overtly religious! The word referred to people gathering to conduct the business of the city, gathering to carry out civic responsibilities.
The early disciples saw themselves as people with a mission relative to the city. And that is what it means to be the church. We are ordinary, broken people, summoned by and gathered around the Risen and Reigning Lord Jesus to share in His life and to conduct the business of the city of God right here in the city of Helena. We are the community that practices resurrection in the midst of a culture surrounded by death.
